Moving Sucks, Whatever You Move

We’ve been away from this blog for a while, and with good reason. We’re in the midst of relocating our office space to the southwest side of Fort Worth. We’re also considering relocating this website/blog to a new hosting company.
Of course, “relocating” is a nice way of saying ripping up our roots and carting everything from its old comfortable place to a new untried one. In the case of the office, it’s finding stuff squirreled away in corners that we’d forgotten we had. It’s moving utilities like phone and internet access. It’s having to establish new services we previously had for free, like electricity. Bottom line, it’s a royal pain in the ass.
For our website, it’s finding scripts and such on the server and making sure we move them. It’s finding all the email accounts and aliases, and coordinating the cutover so that we don’t lose any mail. It’s minimizing downtime to our website, and oh yeah it’s moving all the pages and data and stuff to the new server. Like the office move, this is lso a pain in the ass.
Doubly so, if you try doing both at the same time.
Still, once the dust settles, the whole point of moving – whether office or website – is to end up better off than you would have been otherwise. Hopefully that’s where we’ll end up.
That’s the plan, anyway.
