What is the W3C?

The W3C, or World Wide Web Consortium, is an international body made up of Member organizations, full-time staff, and the public working together to establish Web standards. Their mission: "To lead the World Wide Web to its full potential by developing protocols and guidelines that ensure long-term growth for the Web."

The Web standards promoted by the W3C include "non-proprietary open standards for Web languages and protocols" (HTML, XHTML, XML, and CSS) to avoid "market and Web fragmentation." Essentially, these Web standards are the grammar rules for the common language that allows the various web browsers to bring data and text from the Internet to your computer.

Why is this Important?

As Web developers we translate your information (data, text, and images) into the language of the Web. You should expect your Web developer and web designer to do this using the proper grammar and syntax. After all, this is no different from hiring a technical writer to write copy -- either way, you get work that looks good, sounds good, and uses proper grammar.

Proper code grammar and usage in HTML, XHTML, XML, and CSS provide the following advantages:

  • The ability to be viewed and accessed through a variety of Web browsers (Internet Explorer, FireFox, Opera, etc.) over multiple platforms (Windows and Macintosh).
  • Better Search Engine Optimization by allowing the various search engines easier code to read and catalog into their databases.
  • Improved Accessibility for users who do not view your Website visually.

The Smartacus Corporation strives to write grammatically correct code on all projects because your content deserves the best we can provide. Check the links below and verify our code is valid with the W3C .
